My kid observed that when I have the remote control, I always switch past all sorts of channels complaining that there's nothing going on, and then stop to watch some black and white movie where there's nothing going on.

Perhaps B&Ws are more subtle - but yes, there is a lot going on. The dialog in movies such as Casablanca and African Queen is witty and entertaining. The Thin Man series is fun. The WWII flicks give one a great sense of the spirit of the times: Buy war bonds! All in all there are a lot of good ones out there - I'm sure Jeff could recommend some of the best!
Just tell him that's the adult version of sitting in a house on a summer day surrounded by thousands of dollars of toys and books and electronic equipment and musical instruments and saying, "there's nothing to do."
I think the subtle joys of old movies will sink in, just as classical music has, and jazz. You just have to keep hitting them with it so long as they have nowhere to run.
I'm not so sure, Don. After all, that was my mother's approach to religion, and there exactly zero of her offspring that are now avid churchgoers. Still, you are talking about jazz and old movies, so I think there's a better chance that those will take.

YOu could try the original "Night of the Living Dead." It's B & W, and I doubt he'd complain about a lack of action... :-)
