Tonight should sound the death knell for these contrived televised Presidential "debates". Was it a pointless exercise or what? Both teams have so thoroughly coached their players in how to avoid creating a candidacy-killing debate moment that there's nothing left for them to say. Repeat the same talking points, the half-truths, the semi-lies, say something good about yourself we all already know, and get the hell out without doing any unscripted damage. Gag. What the hell kind of way is this to choose the leader of the free world?
Do you ever feel like you fell through a wormhole and came out in an alternate universe where things are just sort of different and wrong? How else to explain this so-called choice? They're both good men, but one's a has-been and the other a not-yet and neither has an ounce of genuine charisma. Oh, don't start the Obama chant. He never did anything for me. I admire him but he's just another guy with talent and ambition. His opponent, much the same only a few election cycles late. Where the hell was John in 1996?
Well, one thing we can do is forget choosing based on their economic plans. Nobody knows what the hell to do. All they can argue about is in just what way to lower taxes. It seems that in economics as well as in foreign policy the Democrats have shifted right to a greater degree than the Republicans have shifted left, though the Repubs have borrowed a few Dem plays such as leaning more towards universal health care and gay rights than we would have thought possible. Well, it's what the people want, more or less.
Now I can't even remember what they talked about. Oh yeah, John McCain looked into Vladimir Putin's eyes and saw three letters. I keep wondering how many voters these days have any idea what those three letters mean. Wouldn't you have to be over thirty five to even remember the KGB? Much less care? He may as well have reminisced about staring down Huns in their long coats and Pickelhauben.
Tom Brokaw is a cranky old geezer.

I've lost my attention span for pretty much everything on TV, including these debates. Jeff puts them on and I catch bits and pieces. Miz 15 watched and dissected last night's because she's in MUN now and very into both politics and speaking skillz. According to her, Obama did great and McCain is awful. Anyway, the elections are now a stupid sporting event, rah rah, mah team! We want one of them to fuck up so we can boo and hiss. It's just all entertainment.
I'm seriously going to walk in there and vote for every single office except President. You can't write in in my state, and all the third party candidates are loons. But let them count the number of people who showed up to vote, but still chose not to vote for either of these jackasses. What will that do? Nothing. But I can't in good conscience cast a vote for either one.
I used to like Obama, back when he was Not Hillary, but. No. Neither of these guys can lead, and we so need a leader. Politics, of course, does not breed leaders.
The Putin thing was in the first debate, Old Boy.
Teacake, why do you say neither o fthese guys can lead? What would a leader do now if they were in the position of a candidate with little real power to influence events?
Naw, he mentioned Putin both times. I'm sure of it. He's getting old. He's repeating himself. Besides, he mentioned Putin both times. I'm sure of it.
You are getting old, jes' like Ol' John. I watched both, and he only mentioned Putin-KGB the first time. He didn't metion Putin in the second deba- Letmebeclear (as I point BOTH fingers)! He
Did! Not! Mention! Putin! in! the! Second! Debate!
i feel almost sorry for people that can't pick up on the positive aspects of obama as our prez. almost.
I see positive aspects, they're just not very substantive. But since McCain veered from his paternal Admiralty path to become a politician, I'm not very sure about him either.
I have commented in the form of a post on Speaker's Corner West.
What would a leader do now
For one thing, I'd like to hear them stop talking about each other. I'm sick of these debates where instead of answering the bloody question with a solution, they merely point out (almost always falsely) how their opponent caused the problem. Mind you, I'm not saying that as if it's a specific thing these candidates do; it's just politics as usual, and either one wanting us to believe he's not your run-of-the-mill politician is just silly.
Secondly, they are both senators. They do have a certain amount of power. I'm not talking about that "suspending my campaign" circus but just in the course of their jobs, I haven't seen a lot of revolutionary ideas from either of them lately. That bailout bill, when it finally passed, was loaded up with enough pork to kill the entire PETA organization. Funny how I don't hear anyone talking about that.
They're both part of a government that is failing us with almost unprecedented levels of fail. And as much blame as we can lay at the feet of the Bush administration for so many things, it's not a partisan failure.
Just my opinion, of course. :)
I may still vote for Obama, I guess. I will definitely not vote for McCain, and honestly Palin is a huge part of that. I'm still most likely to vote for neither.
