More on Doing the Write Thing

“Hey, Frank.” Staff hadn’t started yet.

“Hey.”

“Written any songs lately?”

“Huh. Why do you ask?”

“Cause you write songs, or do music, or stuff like that.”

“Yeah. No, I have a book where I’ve written down some ideas, maybe like six songs’ worth, but, you know.”

“Yeah.”

“Even on weekends, man. I need more time than that to quiet my brain and get in that space, you know, where I can write something. Can’t do it. Not working at IMC. This place just takes up way too much mental energy.”

“I know exactly what you mean.”

Boy, do I. But it’s nice to know it’s not just me.

Seriously. My office is so slow now that I could definitely have chunks of time to write there, and I don't think they'd care. Yet ... I find it very difficult to be creative while sitting at that desk. For whatever reason this isn't a problem in November when I can churn out a few pages in a short time, but now? Nope. Can't do it. Well, I'm still going to try. Don't want to be a slacker!

Yeah, that makes sense. No slacking at work -- write novel.

Write a novel on company time? That is really aggressive time management. I think you should get a raise!

One must not say, one must do.

"I write only when I'm inspired. Fortunately I'm inspired at 9 o'clock every morning."
- William Faulkner

Easy for him to say. He wasn't doing anything else at 9 in the morning. But still, the concept applies. You gotta get those fingers on the keyboard whether you feel inspired and creative or tired and distracted.

I think the reason this isn't a problem for us in November is that in November we've given ourselves permission to write crappily and fix it later. Maybe we need to do that all the time. That whole I-can-fix-a-bad-page-but-not-a-blank-one thing.
