All Are Beautiful

One thing about having been around awhile: It seems when I look at a beautiful young woman, I can see what she will look like when she is old -- and when I look at an old woman, I can see what she looked like when she was young. I remember there was a time when the distinction mattered.

Funny you write that because I've been thinking about a woman I met this past weekend, the mom of this stunningly beautiful 15 year old girl. The mom appeared ordinary to me, so I didn't make the connection, but after I found out I could see the resemblance. But the mom's face was all tense and scrunched during our convo because she's completely freaked out by the thought that her angel might not get into UCLA, and then (I assume) life is over. It was ugly.

There is no distinction. Beauty is a continuum. The younger woman thinks her beauty is a destination, while the older woman knows it was only one of the stations her train passed through.

The great thing that happens as a man grows older is, he appreciates the whole trip.

I'm rather pleased that the train has moved past the point where the construction workers catcall and you can't stand at a bus stop without unsolicited comments about your ass being flung at you from passing cars full of frat boys. Don't go telling them that middle-aged women still got it.

I always thought that some girls just looked like old women whose skin hadn't wrinkled yet, but also, that thing about don't make a face because if the wind changes, it will stick--that does happen, only it takes about forty or fifty years.
But that's not what you're talking about, I know. I'm going to have to go with Teacake on this one--I'm getting sick and tired of those sorority girls making comments about my ass.

Lately I've become more adept at looking at myself in the mirror and seeing what I'll look like when I'm old. And at the same time, seeing what my son will look like when he's old.
