Holy Rocks

My opinion, the single greatest threat to humanity is religious devotion. I didn’t use to feel that way but I do now. Disagree? Why?

So we got holy rocks at Jerusalem and Mecca and dog knows where else, all over the place, I imagine. People will throw everything, their own survival, the survival of their children, everything, down the drain to defend ideas made tangible by their chosen holy rocks. Freakin’ human beings.

But here are some holey rocks with style. Saw them a few weeks ago down in Utah. Best thing is, no one will ever kill anyone else to defend ‘em. Better not. I'll kill 'em.

I disagree. It's an outcome of your (incorrect) thesis that Islamists pose a greater threat to mankind than fascists or global warming. It's clearly a problem, but get some fucking perspective, man.

Yah, here's yer perspective. Fascists are at least interested in their own survival. Global warming is at worst an outcome of short-sightedness. But religious devotion has the potential to inspire men to leave nothing in their wake, even for themselves. I don't just mean Islamists either.

Religious devotion has caused wars and all sorts of problems for as far back as you care to go, and it is still causing problems today.
Dr Zen - If you really believe Islamic fundamentalists are the greatest threat to mankind, even more than Global Warming, then congratulations to the White House, you have another naive fool believing your propoganda.

Lucyp, Dr. Zen has asserted the opposite of that. He is accusing me of considering Islamists a worse threat than global warming. Both of you are modifying my statement.

"the single greatest threat to humanity is religious devotion"

Global warming will not kill us off. IF it is caused by Mankind, Mankind will eventually come to realize it, and will have and use the power to slow and eventually halt the pollution etc. There may be suffering and displacement etc., but the worse it gets, the less people there will be who insist on continuing to make it worse. Global warming will not kill off the human race.

Religious devotion, on the other hand, is like love. It is stronger than the impulse to survive. You both think of Islamists. But I never mentioned them! Besides, they are a minority among Muslims. We might instead think of those Jews who would rebuild the Temple no matter the bloodshed. We might think of those Christians who wish to hasten the Apocalypse no matter the bloodshed. We might think of those Hindus who believe a thousand Muslim lives is a fair price for the destruction of a temple. We might think of a certain country steeped in a quasi-religious fascism whose leaders "solve" a "problem" by trying to exterminate an entire race of people. Extend these into the technological future. When a disease is engineered that depopulates an entire continent, it will not be released by fascists who would have profited more by enslaving that continent. It will be released by a people turned irrational by their their devotion, and it won't be the first time men slew thousands with the voice of God ringing in their ears.

You're absolutely 100% right, Don. (It's about time! :-) )

Religion has done a lot of positive, but most religion's positives have not come near matching their negatives.

Except Buddhists. As far as I know, they don't bother anybody.

Love these comments. Love the rocks too, thanks for those photos. I was in Arid-zona last fall, went to monument valley and was inspired to become either religious or a photographer. After reading this, I guess I'd say, one should err on the side of photographer.

those are lovely photographs!

i think there is something infantile about religion, something afraid of death and a desperate need to feel that someone is in charge. not that i dont have respect for spirituality but we all know they are two very different things.
